â€Å"A Rose for Emily† Character Analysis of Miss Emily Grierson â€Å"A Rose for Emily† written by William Faulkner, is a story of Miss Emily Grierson, a woman who was born into a wealthy family in the town of Jefferson. She grew up and lived in a huge Victorian home with servants. After the Civil War, it seems that her family’s wealth started to diminish but the Grierson’s were still trapped in the past of their family’s wealth. Emily Grierson’s past and present life is being recalled by a narrator who expresses the attitudes and ideas of the community. Emily, though arrogant and stubborn, grows up in a conservative society where puritan womanhood is firmly believed, so she is wel l aware of the power of tradition. Analyzing the audience and communication apprehension Analysing audience is the act of examining the information of the targeted audience before an oral presentation. The message to the public who is the end-user must in every possible way be appropriate for them, and all the associated communications must strictly target the defined audience. Subsequently, it ensures that there is proper communication between the speaker and the targeted audience. Communication apprehension on its part is a persons level of anxiety or fear which is often associated with anticipated oral presentation to an individual or a group of persons. Although, viewed as an individual trait, communication apprehension is common when one is to provide a presentation in a public forum, especially where a group of people is expecting a good delivery at the end of the session. Accordingly, issues such as novelty of the subject, the le vel of formality or informality of the expected presentation have a big role in affecting a persons communication apprehension. Unfamiliarity with the targeted audience also brings about an increased comprehension apprehension, not until the sense of familiarity along the presentation sets in. Written and Verbal business communication Written business communications are those forms of communications that rely on print media in order to move from one party to another without which it is not regarded as so. Spoken business communications, on the other hand, are merely orally or verbally spoken business arrangements. These two business communications are much distinct in many possible ways. Spoken business communications are regarded as ephemeral while written communications are often static. That is to say, while spoken business communications are often fluid in nature in the sense that they can easily be changed, written business documents are static like the case of an email and therefore not easily changed after sending. Moreover, written documents can easily be stored for future references while spoken word can easily disappear unless recorded or transcribed immediately. Business communications often have varying genres which include application letters and resumes, curriculum vitae, reports and business emails. A good mastery of which particular genre is required for a particular business arrangement is essential in order to enhance effectiveness and authenticity of the message being communicated. However, regardless of the form of rendition of the business message, its sense of formality and professionalism should never be compromised in any way. This is because the very formal nature of the means of communication renders the message a sense of authenticity. Poorly done business documents fail to deliver the expected message, and it connotes a lack of seriousness a high level of unprofessionalism. Just like the written business documents, oral presentations must also portray some sense of competency and accuracy so that the quality of the content is not compromised. In their article published in Technical Communication Quarterly Blythe, Lauer, Curran (2014) argued that both spoken and written business communication should maintain professional demeanor although spoken word may have varying levels of deviations. Written business documents on their part must maintain in every possible way the formality and professionalism for them to equate the weight of their message. In view of the article by Blythe and colleagues (2014) and the two key concepts, I will be able to improve my written business communications in a manner that adapt the formality of my position in the workplace. In any business relations, communication is pivotal in ensuring successful employee and customer interaction which result in both customer satisfaction and maximum productivity on the part of the organization. For any business communication to be efficient and effective, it goes beyond mere speech and hearing, but a great sense of ethical considerations must apply. As such communication must be clear, honest, democratic, logical and it must also respect the intended audience. Within a professional environment, a non-verbalized vocal message such as frequency, timing, intensity, fluency and vocal quality must be used during communication in order to enhance the quality of the communication. Again to ensure the message lands well to the target audience as expected, proper and thorough analysis must be done to reduce chances of communication apprehension which is often associated with public speaking or presentation. This applies even in both written and verbal business communication which demands a considerable level of professionalism and formality. This is considered critical especially in light of the sensitive nature that business relation often have in its wake. Like in any communication, effective business communication within professional working environment demands a good sense of interpersonal communication skills that will promote cohesion and proper relation among workers. Besides, to ensure good relations within the workplace, ineffective and considerably deleterious language should be avoided as this may distort the existing relationships within the organization. In the modern day working environment, great sense of formality and professional demeanor is required to ensure effective organizational communication. Moreover, embracing effective and ethical communication also helps maintain the existing working relationships in workplaces. Common Stereotypes in Society Essay As a society, we tend to stereotype. Whether our presumption is right or wrong, some common stereotypes are still accepted as truth no matter how much evidence there is proving another point of view. Three common stereotypes I see are those that involve abused women, Blacks and their love of fried chicken and the ability of older people learning foreign languages. Many of these stereotypes are reinforced by cultures and what is commonly seen within their culture. These stereotypes can have a long lasting effect on the people that are judged by the stereotype and a long lasting effect on the perception of those people. When most people think about an abused woman, many see the woman with a black eye not realizing that abuse is more than physical. Verbal and mental abuse are also used to control the victim. In many cases, physical abuse is the latter and verbal and mental abuse is the first type introduced. Although there are many shelters and agencies available to abused women, many believe that these women are too afraid to leave the relationship and are blamed for any further abuse they suffer because they didn’t leave or call the police. On the contrary, â€Å"more than 77 percent of them had self-reported to the police. (Barrett, B. , Nov 2011). In the cases when the women have children, many think that they stay because they do not have the means to provide for their family if they leave the home. Based on a handbook by the Santa Clara Probation department, â€Å"victims of domestic violence leave their abuser seven times on average before they are able to stay on their own† (Prophet, T. , 2006). Many of the abused women are presumed as weak and people in general, do not want to assist a weak person because they will more than likely go back to the situation they were just helped out of. There are many shelters available but the funding needed is scarce due to the previous mentioned fear. The second common stereotype is that all Black people like fried chicken. I was taught in school that any statement that expresses that â€Å"all† of anything is definitely a false statement. This stereotype was started a long time ago, and is probably associated with situations related to slavery. â€Å"The most obvious explanation derives from the historical fact that fried chicken dishes were popular in slave homes on Southern plantations. In many cases, chickens were the only livestock animals that slaves were permitted to raise on their own† (Bering, J. (2011). This just proves that the reason fried chicken is associated with African Americans is not because they enjoy the food so much but it was the only choice they had when it came to what was availbe to them. The other reason there is such a negative connotation associated with fried chicken is because the slavery era itself was not a good time for African Americans (Bering, J. 2011). As an unhealthy and inexpensive food, fried chicken invokes images of poverty, ignorance, sloth, and other racist associations† (Bering, J. 2011). Not only is the mention of fried chicken and African Americans considered negative, it has also been viewed as racist. Advertisers seem to gear their commercials towards the African American community when advertising for fried chicken. Mary J. Blige received a lot of flack for being in a Burger King commercial advertising their New Crispy Strips Tortilla Wraps. The commercial was eventually pulled from rotation due to the backlash received. Other high profile individuals have also been targeted by the chicken industry, including President Obama. Although it’s no secret that these people do enjoy fried chicken, associating these people with the food generated a negative or racial tone. There is nothing wrong with these people liking fried chicken, as there are many other racial groups that also enjoy this cuisine. The third common stereotype would be the idea that older adults will have a harder time learning foreign languages when compared to younger children. One of the reasons for this stereotype can be attributed to the older adult and the teacher, they have doubts about their ability to learn a foreign language. Although most people have accepted the generalization of learning as â€Å"the younger the better† (Schleppegrell, M. , 1987), this is not the case when it comes to learning language. There have been studies that have determined that aging does not decline a person’s learning ability. The way older adults learn a new skill is the only adjustments that need to be made. These studies also show that older adults learn at a more rapid rate than children (Krashen, Long, and Scarcella, 1979). There are two reasons why being a poor language learner is attributed to adults, and those are â€Å"a theory of the brain and how it matures, and classroom practices that discriminate against the older learner† (Schleppegrell, M. , 1987). The critical period hypothesis that was put forth in the 1960s was based on then-current theories of brain development, and argued that the brain lost cerebral plasticity after puberty, making second language acquisition more difficult as an adult than as a child (Lenneberg, 1967). Due to advances in the study of neurology, it has been determined that adults have superior language learning capabilities. These studies and facts should dispel any accepted stereotypes related to older adults and their ability to learn foreign languages. One thing that is common amongst all of these stereotypes is that the â€Å"victim† has accepted these stereotypes to be true and doesn’t challenge any of the information that would affirm or deny such claims. This could also be the first step into getting some of these stereotypes removed from our culture so that people are able to benefit positively and not have to worry about any negative impacts from doing activities that are natural.

The Scarlet Letter Essay -- Literary Analysis, Hawthorne

The aspect of Nature in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter seems to have been characterized to readers with having a mixed blessing. Rather than illustrating Nature in the typical Puritanical manner of the 1600’s, that Nature is downright evil, tying Nature to the â€Å"Black Man,† Hawthorne uses a different approach. Instead, Nature is fairly two-sided in that it portrays destructive as well as somewhat therapeutic powers. The text reveals the positive attributes of Nature that the Puritans overlook or fear. Conversely, the text shows that aspects of Nature that help mankind also harm him. The duality of Nature mirrors the complex inner feelings and dual nature of the novel’s characters. Nature represents the paradoxical juxtaposition of both good and evil in man, by showing both good and evil attributes in itself. Ultimately, Nature reveals man's inherent inability to be pure. By presenting a number of aspects of Nature that are beneficial to man, the text manages to discount the one-sided Puritanical view of Nature as an outright evil influence. Nature provides both Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale with some feelings of renewal and relief by giving each a sense of freedom from the oppression of society. For example, Hester, by living in a "lonesome cottage, by the sea shore,† (166) a place representative of Nature, is able to invoke such thoughts "dared to enter no other dwelling in New England† (166). Her isolation from society amidst the liberating influence of Nature, releases her from the restrictions that determine what is acceptable to believe, allowing her mind to roam "as freely as the wild Indian in his woods"(203). Her "estranged point of view," her "fate and fortunes", in addition to her homely cottage by the se... ...he way her mother does is best. Also in her pursuit of truth, she fervently desires Dimmesdale to stand with her and Hester in the sunlight, unknowingly requesting that her father reveal the truth about the bond between them all. Her quest for truth eventually leads her to "pledge that she [will] grow up amid human joy and sorrow"(251), ceasing to "forever do battle with the world"(251), and instead "be a woman in it"(251). The novel culminates its message of duality by showing the lawless child of nature embrace, in part, the morality of society. In order to live truth, Pearl must hold on to her wild roots, while accepting a civilized future. She must free herself from the isolation of New England, but not give herself over to the complete lawlessness of the forest. She seems on the verge of living the message of the novel by accepting the duality of her nature.

Taylor Maybeck Dr. Christopher English 110-12 3 February 2013 A Martyr or A Murder? Ever since the year 1983, the number of suicide bombing acts has risen significantly. Shockingly, most suicides are performed by people who are not â€Å"conformed to the typical profile of the suicidal personality†¦ none of them [are] uneducated, desperately poor, simple-minded, or depressed,† according to author David Brooks (352). Suicide bombers give their own lives as a way to show loyalty and to be seen as martyrs to their people.Many families urge their children to go through bomber training and recruitment, claiming that they will be happy if their children die while successfully killing â€Å"enemies. † Suicide should not be praised, urged, or seen as an act of martyrdom by families unless it is a disastrous and uncontrollable situation. In Palestinian areas, suicide bombing has become an act of choice, and is a highly spreading enterprise ( Brooks 352). In their society, s uicide bombers go through recruitment and training. Organizations praise their bombers and reward them by using several tactics.Bombers are trained spiritually and told about the rewards they can receive in their afterlife, as well as bribed by being told that their family will be guaranteed a place with god. Families of the bomber are satisfied with the idea that they will go to god, and this also serves as motivation to the bombers themselves. Faith is not a subject of bribery and should never be used in such ways. Everyone has the right to create his or her own beliefs, and by being intensely trained for hours, bomber trainees become brainwashed.This means that trainees no longer have the ability to make their own decisions on whether they need to perform the act of suicide. They see it as an obligation rather than an option. Aside from this, a television show has been created and is growing in its amount of viewers. Children start learning of the option of suicide at very young ages. In â€Å"The Culture of Martyrdom†, David Brooks states, â€Å" Last year the BBC shot a segment about so-called Paradise Camps- summer camps in which children as young as eight are trained in military drills and taught about suicide bombers† (353).Seeing suicide bombing on television, children get the idea that these bombers are comparable to superheroes, and that if they become bombers they too will be on television and popular in their community. Not only do bombers get praised by sacrificing their lives, but their families and friends also pressure them. The strangest aspect of suicide bombing is the fact that after the massacres, the bomber’s family is showcased in a televised interview. While the usual American family would react with sadness and hatred, Israeli and Western families react in a happy and joyful way.Many interviews state that parents agreed if the opportunity was given to them again, they would send another child off to afterlife witho ut hesitation (Brooks 353). Families urge their children to give their lives and do not view it as a disastrous event. Most children live to please their parents, and because of this, they do not make their own choices on becoming a bomber. Similar to how American families pressure their children by telling them their destiny is to attend college, these families tell their children their destiny is to be a suicide bomber and sacrifice their lives for others.The difference between these two situations is that education is life changing, and bombing is life ending. Parents should not urge their children to end their lives for any reason. If a person is mentally stable and healthy, they should live their life as long as they are able, without any pressure to act in suicidal ways. A martyr is a person who suffers a death because of standing up for what he or she believes in. Those who die and become known as martyrs are usually citizens who were placed in horrible situations.For example , the recent shooting in Newtown, Connecticut at the elementary school claims that teacher Victoria Soto is a martyr. This is because when a gunman attacked her classroom, she protected her students and gave her own life in order to save their lives. In no way did Soto choose to be placed in this situation, but when she was she gave her life to save others. Suicide bombers have no need to give their life by bombing enemies when the so -called â€Å"enemies† are not harming them. Bombers are told to walk into small food shops or buildings and wait for their bomb to go off.However, they are sacrificing their lives due to a situation that they have created for themselves. If there is no harm coming their way, there should be no reason to give their lives unless it is during a time of battle. Brooks states that in Israel areas, â€Å" Martyrdom [is] not just a means, but an end†(Brooks 352). Many suicide bombers give their lives, and may only successfully kill two â€Å"e nemies. † Sometimes they kill people who are not enemies; people who are normal citizens aiming to stay out of trouble are often harmed. That is not an act of martyrdom, but an act of murder.Suicide bombing has become such a phenomenon, and the people have become so addicted to rush of vengeance and murder that they are overlooking the true definition of a martyr ( Brooks, 353). Suicide bombers give their lives as an act of loyalty, and a way to show bravery and integrity. However, families and communities should not praise this act or urge others to sacrifice their lives. The loss of a life should not be seen as a celebration. A martyr is not something someone chooses to be; it is something that someone has no choice but to be.Children and young adults should not be raised or brainwashed into becoming suicide bombers. These bombers are healthy, stable people, giving their life to please corrupted people that surround them. It is extremely wrong for families to encourage membe rs to act in a suicidal way, and the community should put an end to the madness of suicide bombing. “a Farewell to Arms” by Hemingway

A Farewell to Arms A symbol is an idea that represents another idea that has meaning behind it. In â€Å"A farewell to arms† by Hemingway, there are several symbols that help us understand the story better. Rain, river, and the officer’s stars are some that Hemingway uses to represent another idea. Rain is a recurrent symbol in the book that represents the idea of death and lost. At the beginning of the book Lt. Henry says â€Å"At the start of the winter came the permanent rain and with the rain came the cholera. But it was checked and in the end only seven thousand died of it in the army† (Hemingway 4). Lt. Henry is associating the rain with the seven thousands of soldiers that died. When Henry and Catherine are in the hospital she says that â€Å"she is afraid of the rain because she sees herself dead in it† (Hemingway 126). She says this because she is afraid that his love for Henry will not last and eventually their love will die. While rain represents death and lost in the other hand the river represents the opposite. River is another important symbol in â€Å"A farewell to arms†. The river represents hope, a new beginning. When Lt. Henry is capture by the battle police for treachery he thinks to himself; â€Å"So far they had shot every one they had questioned [†¦ ] I ducked down, pushed between two men, and ran for the river† (Hemingway 225). Lt. Henry jumps into the river because he wants to forget everything about the war. He leaves everything behind except Catherine to start a new life. Officers often wear stars to represent their status in the army and show how important they are. They represent competence and duty. In chapter 15 when Lt. Henry is the hospital because of his injured leg a doctor tells him they can not operate till 3 months. Lt. Henry calls for another doctor, Dr. Valentini which agrees to operate on him. Lt Henry says â€Å"There was a star in a box on his sleeve because was a major† (Hemingway 100). In Bombay, business passed in the shares of banks like the commercial bank, the chartered mercantile bank, the chartered bank, the oriental bank and the old bank of Bombay and shares of cotton presses. In Calcutta, Englishman reported the quotations of 4%, 5%, and 6% loans of East India Company as well as the shares of the bank of Bengal in 1836. This list was a further broadened in 1839 when the Calcutta newspaper printed the quotations of banks like union bank and Agra bank. It also quoted the prices of business ventures like the Bengal bonded warehouse, the Docking Company and the storm tug company. Between 1840 and 1850, only half a dozen brokers existed for the limited business. But during the share mania of 1860-65, the number of brokers increased considerably. By 1860, the number of brokers was about 60 and during the exciting period of the American Civil war, their number increased to about 200 to 250. The end of American Civil war brought disillusionment and many failures and the brokers decreased in number and prosperity. It was in those troublesome times between 1868 and 1875 that brokers organized an informal association and finally as recited in the Indenture constituting the â€Å"Articles of Association of the Exchange†. On or about 9th day of July, 1875, a few native brokers doing brokerage business in shares and stocks resolved upon forming in Bombay an association for protecting the character, status and interest of native share and stock brokers and providing a hall or building for the use of the members of such association. As a meeting held in the broker’ Hall on the 5th day of February, 1887, it was resolved to execute a formal deal of association and to constitute the first managing committee and to appoint the first trustees. Accordingly, the Articles of Association of the Exchange and the Stock Exchange was formally established in Bombay on 3rd day of December, 1887. The Association is now known as â€Å"The Stock Exchange†. The entrance fee for new member was Re.1 and there were 318 members on the list, when the exchange was constituted. The numbers of members increased to 333 in 1896, 362 in 1916and 478 in 1920 and the entrance fee was raised to Rs.5 in 1877, Rs.1000 in 1896, Rs.2500 in 1916 and Rs. 48,000 in 1920. At present there are 23 recognized stock exchanges with about 6000 stock brokers. It is obligatory for the person to abide by the rules, regulations and the buy-law. As per the listing requirements, a company where the paid-up capital is Rs. 3 crore but not more than Rs. 5 crore and having a commercial operation for less than 2 years should appoint a market maker at the time of issue of securities. 4.)
